Book Review: Maua and The Garden of Plenty
Maua and the Garden of Plenty is a children’s book written by Linda Omare, co-founder of leading pan-Afrikan content creator, 2nacheki and published by Kunda Kids, which was founded in 2020 by Nigerian-Ghanaian husband and wife team, Oladele and Louisa Olafuyi, during the Covid-19 lockdown.
The book tells the story of a little girl, a child in a family of many, who chooses to rise to the challenge of helping her village overcome a food crisis. Though often overlooked, Maua does not let that faze her and when the time comes, her creativity and determination help to save her people and teach them some valuable lessons in the process about self-confidence, resilience and gratitude.
The book is described as being suitable for children aged 3-8 years old and is beautifully illustrated by Nigerian artist, Chike Obasi.
Maua and the Garden of Plenty is a creative collaboration between 2nacheki and Kunda Kids that seeks to bring fun, progressive and inclusive stories to children across Africa and the rest of the world.
Book author, Linda Omare, had this to say about the book, “I wanted to write about something that is familiar to me but also to reach out to other children who have something that’s different about them to let them know that being different is not something bad, it’s what makes them special. We want children to accept their hair, their skin tone and body sizes and those are some of the things that you learn from Maua and the Garden of Plenty.”
As a couple, the founders of Kunda Kids had struggled to find enough books for their son about Afrika’s ancient history and culture, so they decided to create their own and have since published several high-quality books, starting with content that is based on Afrikan history.
Kunda Kids co-founder, Oladele Olafuyi said, “We take a lot of time to put in the research to write quality stories. When you have a good story, everything else becomes easy from there. We decided to start with books because we want to make sure the next generation of kids grow up seeing themselves in books and reading Afrikan stories. Going forward we will be telling these stories in all our Afrikan languages, and will also be releasing a mobile app soon where Afrikan bedtime stories are available at your fingertips.”
The 2nacheki and Kunda Kids will continue to collaborate on more books in the near future.
