About the Cover Art by Samuel Phillips
Nothing is random to a man of truth, and to the man who
bears the spear that causes birthing by blood and water, noth-
ing is hidden. He may walk blindly and in ignorance at some
point and for a duration of time, but the living spring in him
will always lead him back to the path of Life and Spirit, where
by beholding the mercy and grace poured out in the place of
sacrifice, he cries out, “of a truth thou art the Son of God.”
The artwork used for this book cover was done many
years ago from a tutorial, just for the fun of learning some-
thing new. I created it then, but I did not have any use
for it at the time, nor did it have much meaning to me,
but the moment it became what must be used for this
book, the revelation of the art work came almost instantly.
To provide a clear and concise interpretation of
the artwork from my own perspective, I will try
to break down the various elements found in it:
The Elements:
The elements on the cover are: the sunrise; the tree under
the sun; the four white birds; the dog under the tree; the man
holding a spear; the woman on a hill worshiping using a djem-
be drum, the child crawling; the river running in front of them;
the mountainous landscape across the river; and the big tree.
In its most basic form, the sunrise speaks of the emerging of
life in Afrika as the cradle of humanity, the four white birds
flying across the sun speaks of the spirit-eyes of God that goes
to and fro the entire earth, the tree under the sun speaks of
