RECLASSIFICATION OF COLORADO LAND TO WILDERNESS
In Colorado millions of acres are being reclassified as restricted wilderness to prevent the extraction of
lumber, coal, oil and gas and to prohibit all non-recreational use. http://thomas.loc.gov/cgi-

Through the “Overall Central Mountains Proposal” Senator Udall is again attempting to expand
wilderness areas in Colorado. Over 5%, 3,727,996 acres, is already designated wilderness and Udall
wants to add an additional 235,773 which would bring the total amount of designated wilderness in
Colorado to just under 6%. Environmentalist politicians and nature groups are setting aside millions
of “natural acres” in many states and creating “land trusts” to “protect areas that have scenic,
historical, or cultural significance”.
